Thinking Thursday

Students use their imaginations to create a structure, person, feature in nature, an experience or observation, the possibilities are endless, from the shape provided. After drawing, students write 3-6 sentences, or a story, to describe their drawing. Some sentence or story starters might be:

  • I drew a
  • My structure is
  • I used my imagination to make
  • My story is about
  • Once upon a time

Students are very good story writers. Students are encouraged to write a story about their creation. Remember to edit your writing and check for the correct spelling of familiar sight words, upper case letters at the beginning of a sentence and periods at the end!

Sight Word Activities

Before starting the sight word activities, practice reading the word list as a warm up. Students may want to practice words from previous lists or choose words that are a bit tricky to read and spell such as what, were, think, came, could, was and some.

Activity One

Students print the sight words from this week, from a previous list or a list of favourite words, with a white crayon on a piece of paper or on the sheet below. (Please disregard the instructions on the paper.) Students then take markers and colour over the words and see what happens! Students read the chosen sight words to a family member when they are finished.

Activity Two

Students print sight words from their list on the line and then colour the ten frame to match the number of letters in the word.

Activity Three

With a family member, students choose sight words from this week’s list. The student turns around and the family member chooses a sight word and rewrites the word by mixing up the letters. The student them turns around and figures out which sight word it is and rewrites it correctly. Variation: After rewriting the sight word correctly the student can put the word in a sentence.

Math

Grade Two Activity

Grade two students this is the last math activity sheet in a series of two digit addition number sentences. Continue practicing with Base Ten Blocks and a Hundred Chart to support your learning. Once complete check out the new math game Every Birdies Adding!

Grade One students can use their mental math strategies to complete the math activity sheet. These include:

  • adding a number to zero does not change the number
  • counting on by 1, 2, and 3 starting with the largest number
  • pairs that always equal ten
  • doubles adding a number to itself
  • doubles plus one
  • adding ten to a number

Students can cut and paste or print the number sentences on the cones. For a challenge students could read the number sentences, call out the sum and then explain which strategy, from above, they used.

New Math Games

The Snowman Race Game is like Race to 100. However, if players land on a snowman they move forward 10 spaces and if a player lands on a snowstorm players move back 5 spaces. The other Snowman Race is to 120. Students choose which game they are ready for!

Every Birdies Adding math game challenges players to figure out addition and subtraction number sentences, sums and differences, with a challenge. The game is for two to three players, one die and the game board. Roll the die and find a number sentence to solve in the column. Once a sum or differnce is given, and the other players agree that it is correct, the space is marked with a playing piece. The winner either marks all the number sentences in a column or three across by three down. Students may need a hundred chart for support.

Read Aloud

I want to end our learning from home time with The Kindness Book by Todd Parr. This book has so many wonderful ways that we can be kind to each other, our community and ourselves. I look forward to seeing everyone tomorrow at school when we can share our Pink Shirt Day art and writing projects. Remember to wear your pink shirt or another article of pink clothing to school tomorrow.
